In my Bible reading this morning, I read in 2 Chronicles 29:1-15. This passage introduces the beginning of King Hezekiah’s reign in Judah following the death of his father, King Ahaz. King Ahaz had been rebellious to the God of Israel and increasingly unfaithful to the Lord. He had built high altars throughout Jerusalem to which he sacrificed to foreign gods. Hezekiah had a different heart than that of his father. “In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he opened the doors of the house of the Lord and repaired them, Then he brought in the priests and the Levites and gathered them in the East Square and said to them: ‘Hear me, Levites! Now sanctify yourselves, sanctify the house of the Lord God of your fathers. and carry out the rubbish from the holy place” And the priests obeyed the words of the Lord and the commandment of the king to cleanse the house of the Lord.
In reading this passage, The Lord revealed something to me which parallels this Scripture reference wonderfully. “Cleanse the house of the Lord”. Our bodies are the temples or houses of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own”? Our bodies are God’s temples. Then I was able to reflect even deeper in the parallel to the 2 Chronicles passage. Just as king Ahaz had done during his reign, I have allowed some idol worship to go on in my own life. If I could compartmentalize every aspect of my life into little rooms, I’m sure there are some rooms in His temple that are way beyond presentable or clean. At the very least very cluttered and in disarray. So in applying God’s Word to my life and desiring it to do what God intends for it to do, I prayed and asked God to send in the High Priest, the Lord Jesus Christ to cleanse His temple. Thoroughly and completely. For Hebrews 4: 14-16 tells us “seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need”.
Our bodies are the temples of God. We have been commanded by the Word of the Lord to “cleanse the house of the Lord.” We have a great High Priest who knows us , sympathizes with our weaknesses and bids us come boldly to His throne of grace and mercy to find help. Praise God for His Word, the Bible which is still relevant today. I plan to take time to pray each day as God leads me in opening up all the rooms of His temple to Him for His powerful cleansing process to begin. I hope you’ll join me in considering this for yourself as well.
